Oct. 23, 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2007 Southwest ITA Regionals hosted by Texas Tech came to a close yesterday at the McLeod Tennis Center. Baylor swept this year's tournament, winning both the doubles and singles championships.
Tech's women's tennis team showed some promise this weekend, finding some solid wins in both singles and doubles play. The Lady Raider had six players in the main draw singles, and five teams in the doubles draw. Samantha van der Drift led her team in singles by advancing to the third round, falling, 6-1, 6-0, to Baylor's hard-hitting No. 2 seed Lenka Broosova, winner of the singles and doubles title.
The Raiders' doubles had a better run with two of their seeded teams also advancing to the third round. Janet Durham and Kelsy Garland, No. 7-seed, went 1-1 after a first-round bye, before losing 8-6 to Davison and Larsson from Texas, and Kerryn Potgeiter and van der Drift, No. 8-seed, fell to Texas A&M's Liles and Sammons. In consolation, the freshman pair of Simone Templeton and Ingrid Ballus went on to win their consolation bracket, 9-7, over Bielikova and Chmelarova from Baylor.
This tournament was the last of the fall for the Lady Raiders, as they will return to the courts in January for duals action. For more information and complete results of the 2007 Southwest Regional, visit the women's tennis page at www.texastech.com.
