Lady Raiders Have Mixed Results on Day 2 of ITA Regional Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team had mixed results on the second day of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships as the duo of Kelsy Garland and Samantha van der Drift advanced to the round of 32 in doubles play. The duo of senior van der Drift and sophomore Garland won their second round match by beating Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm of North Texas 8-5. They play the No. 2 seed Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska of TCU at 12:30 p.m. In the second day of play sophomore Simone Templeton continued her strong play in the qualifying rounds at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships. She advanced to the open singles draw by beating Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice 6-0, 6-4. She lost 6-4, 6-1 to Lauren Santacroce of Texas A&M in the first round of the open singles draw Junior Kerryn Potgieter fell 6-2, 6-4 to the No. 1 seed Mariantonieta Gutierrez of Lamar in the qualifying bracket. Van der Drift won her opening round of the open singles draw 6-1, 6-0 over Erika Iriarte of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In a tough three set match, Garland fell to Sarah Lancaster of Texas 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round of the open singles draw. The Lady Raiders had a few play in consolation rounds. Junior Kyla Coleman won 6-3, 1-6, 10-2 over Sara Pesic of UT-Arlington in the south bracket. Freshman Natalie Lietch took three sets to get past Brigette Marcovich of Louisiana-Monroe 3-6, 6-4, 13-11 in the the west bracket. The north bracket had freshman Stefanie Peana and freshman Lindsey Holcomb. Peana lost to Kathrin Lange of Northwestern State 6-4, 6-2 and Holcomb got beat 6-2, 6-1 by Vicky Simpson of Houston.
The Lady Raiders struggled in other doubles action. The team of Potgieter and Templeton fell 8-1 to Carlene Leyden and Julia Wiegand of Texas. Coleman and Holcomb lost a tie break 9-8 to Constanza Gonzalez and Manami Kuroda of Lamar. The duo of Leitch and Peana lost to the Rice team of Rebecca Lin and Alexandra Rasch 8-4. Tech continues play at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. |
