Lady Raiders Split in the Desert

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Women's Tennis Team went 1-1 this weekend in their first road test of 2008. The team advances to 4-1, and will return to the McLeod Tennis Center to face North Texas on Fri., Feb. 8, and Nevada on Sat., Feb. 9. Tech's first challenge of the season came against No. 39 ranked Arizona. Despite the Lady Raiders' reputation as a solid doubles squad, the Wildcats took the early advantage by winning the doubles point. In singles Arizona continued to feed on their home-court advantage, solidifying the match with consecutive wins at the No. 6, 4 and 1positions. Although the match had been decided, Tech did not give up. The team walked away with three singles victories from Kelsy Garland at No. 2, Simone Templeton at No. 3, and Kerryn Potgieter at No. 5. Looking for redemption from a disappointing 4-3 loss to the Wildcats, the Lady Raiders came out in full force against San Diego. Tech swept all three doubles, with senior Janet Durham and sophomore Potgieter clinching the 1-0 lead. Maria Jose Andres moved in and dominated at No. 6, as Templeton soon followed with her fifth consecutive singles win. Samantha van der Drift stepped up and put away the match for her team, winning 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1.
