Women's Tennis Squad begins Play at Big 12 Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team will take to the courts in the 1998 Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska. Hosted by the University of Nebraska, the Red Raiders will face the Huskers in the first round, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Woods Park Courts.

Texas Tech enters the contest as the No. 8 seed with a 5-6 conference record, while Nebraska stands in the No. 9 spot at 4-7 in the Big 12. The winner will advance to play Texas at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Tech defeated the Huskers earlier in the season, winning 5-4 on March 1 in Lincoln, Neb. The Red Raiders moved up to a No. 70 ranking in the Rolex Collegiate Tennis Rankings Tuesday. Freshman Zana Zlebnik now sits at No. 58 among singles with a 16-5 overall record in the No. 1 slot. Doubles rankings will be released on Wednesday.

Tech defeated Abilene Christian 7-2 Monday night in the Athletic Training Center in a match that was rescheduled from earlier in the season. The Red Raiders captured five of six singles matches and notched two doubles victories for the win. Zlebnik, Amanda Earhart, Lakshmi Ravindra, Sarada Ravindra and Misty Meyer all recorded singles wins, while the pairs of Zlebnik-Earhart and L. Ravindra-S. Ravindra tallied points in doubles.
