AUSTIN, Texas - The 2009-2010 Texas Tech women's tennis season came to an end on Friday evening at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center with their 4-0 quarterfinal loss to third-seed Nebraska.

After defeating the Missouri Tigers 4-1 in their first round match on Thursday afternoon, the No. 6 seed Lady Raiders could not overcome a fresh and aggressive Cornhuskers squad the following evening.

Nebraska claimed with the doubles point for the match. The Huskers No. 1 doubles team of Stefanie Weinstein and Madeleine Geibert downed Kelsy Garland and Natalie Leitch, 8-2. The Cornhusker No.3 doubles pair of Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg stopped Caroline Starck and Stefanie Peana, 8-5. Texas Tech's No. 2 doubles duo of Elizabeth Ullathorne and Sandra Dynka were leading Nebraska's Janine Weinreich and Wiveca Swarting when play in their match was suspended, 6-5.

Nebraska closed out the evening by winning three of the singles matches. They won at Nos. 3, 4, and 5.Wiveca Swarting stopped Kelsy Garland at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1. No. 5 singles finished next as Janine Weinreich downed Caroline Starck, 6-3, 6-4. Nebraska claimed the 4-0 match win with Stefanie Weinstein's win at No. 4 singles over Elizabeth Ullathorne, 6-3, 6-4.

Three matches were in play when Nebraska held their 4-0 lead. At No. 1 singles, Sandra Dynka and Madeleine Geibert each won a set and were just starting their third set when play was suspended. Natalie Leitch and Mary Weatherholt each won a set at No. 2 singles. Weatherholt held a 4-0 lead in the third set when play stopped. Lady Raider Lorena Aviles won her first set at No. 6 singles, 6-3, over Jennifer Holmberg and was leading the second set 4-1 when play was suspended.

 

 

Texas Tech's (11-12, 5-6 Big 12) sixth place finish in the Big 12 Conference is their best league finish since the 2005-2006 season.
