MIDLAND, Texas – On the heels of two straight Big 12 titles, the No. 18 Texas Tech Lady Raider netters open the season at the 2013 Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational held at the Midland Racquet Club this weekend.

This annual collegiate event features some of the nation’s top collegiate teams, including Pepperdine, Nebraska, Rice, Texas, TCU, Penn State, Boise State and Baylor.

“I am excited to get things started,” said two-time Big 12 coach of the year Todd Petty. “We have had a great couple of weeks of practice and I feel like the girls are eager to get competitive and get used to college tennis.

“I am also looking forward to seeing where the freshmen stand and see what we need to work on moving forward this fall. The one thing I am very impressed with is the work ethic of the newcomers to our program. They are working extremely hard. It is still not where we want to be, but that is to be expected at this point. We have tons of talent. Now we have to just mold it in the right way.

Five Lady Raiders are heading to Midland to begin the season – senior Nikki Sanders and four newcomers in junior transfer Sarah Toti, and freshmen Claire Williams, Samantha Czarniak Rego and Beatriz Machado Santos.

Sanders enters the season ranked No. 118 in the nation. She is 73-19 in singles over the last three seasons and is one of the winningest players in program history. This summer she captured the ITA Summer Circuit Event held at Notre Dame.

Toti, Williams, Czarniak Rego and Machado Santos are a part of the No. 16 recruiting class that Petty landed this spring. It is the highest rated recruiting class in program history.
