LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed play in the Baylor Tennis Classic in Waco this weekend, coming away with what is probably its best performance of the fall despite not having the services of its top two players.

Sonia Orellano earned runner-up honors in the Flight "B" portion of the tournament and was selected by the coaching staff as the team's Player of the Week. Also in Flight "B", Michelle Colaninni came away with a fourth place finish and Noel Ruiz finished fourth in Flight "C". The Red Raider were without the services of Zana Zlebnik and Amanda Earhart, the team's No. 1 and 2 singles players, because of injuries.

"Each week we've progressed a little bit and that's encouraging," said Tech coach Virginia Brown. "Baylor is a good team, one of the better teams in the conference and we played with them in the lower part of our lineup."

Orellano received a bye in the first round then stepped up to defeat her second round opponent Louise Soderkvist of Texas-San Antonio in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. In the semifinals Orellano dealt Baylor their only loss of the tournament when she defeated Claudia Aguilar in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the final round Orellano fell to Baylor's Karin Andersson in two sets, 2-6, 2-6.

The women are scheduled to play once more during the fall season at the ITA Rolex Invitational in Austin November 5 through 8.
