Texas Tech to Host 19th Annual Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Classic

Undefeated Red Raiders will play South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Southwestern Louisiana

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will host its 19th annual Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Classic this weekend at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Texas Tech (7-0) enters the tournament ranked 27th in the weekly USA Today/AVCA coaches' poll with 24 votes, coming off two consecutive tournament victories.

Senior Cristine Martin will be making her season debut after awaiting an NCAA decision to allow her to compete with a fifth year of eligibility. After eight months, Tech head coach Jeff Nelson and Martin learned on Tuesday that an NCAA committee granted her a fifth season. Martin underwent two arthroscopic surgeries as a freshman and played in seven matches over 16 games. That year counted toward her four-year eligibility clock. She owns Tech all-time records for career service aces (150) and season service aces (50 in 1996).

Tech will face three schools from the Southeast including South Carolina, Southwestern Louisiana and Louisiana Tech. South Carolina (3-1) head coach Kim Hudson makes her return to West Texas. Hudson, who hails from Amarillo, graduated from Texas Tech in 1982. Her Gamecocks finished third in the Southeastern Conference with an overall record of 22-8 last season and should be formidable competition with all six starters returning. Southwestern Louisiana should have a hefty fan base as its football team will play the Texas Tech football team on Saturday and is scheduled to attend one of the Rajin' Cajun volleyball matches during the weekend. The third competing school, Louisiana Tech, is coming off a 3-2 victory against Alabama and could be a tough opponent.

In the 18 years of Red Raider Classic competition, Texas Tech is 51-15 in all matches and has won the tournament nine times including the 1996 invitational which featured Virginia, Nevada-Las Vegas and North Texas. Admission is $5.00 for adults per session and $3.00 for students with Tech identification. Parking is available west of the Coliseum near Flint Avenue or out on Brownfield Highway.
