This is the Fourth Tournament of Season Before Big XII Conference Play Begins
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will depart for Colorado Springs, Colo. today to compete in the five-team Air Force Falcon Classic over the weekend on Friday and Saturday.
For Texas Tech (9-1), ranked No. 32 in the weekly AVCA/USA Today coaches' poll, the tournament will be a key tuneup before Big XII Conference play begins on Friday, Sept. 26 and 27 at Missouri and Iowa State respectively. Tech's next home match will be against Texas on October 3.
Head coach Jeff Nelson's Red Raiders will play four matches at the Air Force Falcon Classic including Denver, Air Force, Hofstra and William & Mary. The matches will be particularly significant for sophomore outside hitter Courtney Putnam and freshman middle blocker Janelle Jones, who both are natives of Denver.
"We not only want to stay focused but we want to control the ball, work on blocking and passing and overall strengthen our defense," Nelson said.
In the weekly NCAA season statistics report, Tech is ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in two categories: 13th in team attack percentage (.296 percentage) and match won-lost percentage (.900- 9-1 overall record).
