Quoting Texas Tech Coach Jeff Nelson

Weekly Press Conference

Opening Comments
"It was a real long weekend. We were stuck in Colorado for four days and got back to Lubbock early this morning. It certainly was a lot better having won the match. It took a little of the edge off after having been stuck there for so long. The Colorado match, we started slow and dropped the first game. We didn't look good but we regrouped and played a real solid match Courtney Putnam had her third big evening in a row- 27 kills and hit over .500 for us which is absolutely outstanding. Lisa (Hilgers) had another great night for us. She put up 53 assists and had 16 digs. We're starting to get some real solid performances from people in places where they should. Sonia Moric had a career-high nine blocks and Cristine Martin had 19 digs again. So I think we're starting to steady out and starting to figure out our lineup after two months of moving people in and out alot and doing different things.

On the Nebraska match, which was cancelled on Saturday, Oct. 25 due to weather conditions:s
"Saturday, we were supposed to go to Nebraska. We were bombarded with snow- in Boulder we had 28 inches. There were places where they had up to 51 inches of snow. We were stuck. We felt on Sunday, we would get out. We had already cancelled the Nebraska match. We couldn't get a plane flight out and couldn't get anyone to get us home, so we finally chartered a bus and drove home last night and got home at 5:00 a.m. this morning. We are disappointed that the match is cancelled for tonight. They play at Texas A&M the night before and they feel pretty good about it right now. They were caught in same thing we were. The weather's better but the flight crews haven't got in and out, so flights are still being cancelled. That's why they weren't able to be down here this afternoon. The big reason why we have Lisa here today is because Lisa will go over 4,000 career assists on Thursday. She's second on the team in hitting and in the top-10 in hitting in the Big 12 and that's pretty unusual for someone in the setter position. The big thing is this is quite a career mark for her. She needs 16 assists for her to go over 4,000. We kind of hoped that we played against Nebraska because she had about 30 people drive down from Minnesota for the match- that's where she's from."

On what the Red Raiders did while waiting out the storm in Boulder, Colo.:
"A lot of our players from California and down in Houston had never see that much snow. They spent some time sledding outside the Coors Events Center and some fun things like that."

On how tough it will be to play three matches in a row:
"I think the first match, we'll make sure everyone plays just to get that experience. Kansas State is playing great right now. We've really got to get up for that match on Friday night. They beat Texas A&M this weekend 3-0 so it was pretty decisive. A&M of course was ranked No. 12 in the country. There's seven or eight teams right now in the Big 12 playing really good volleyball and it's going to be tough. One of the things that most people don't understand about volleyball is that these players grow up playing club volleyball where they play in three or four day tournaments where they play in four or five matches a day. Most of them should be okay with it. It's a little bit different when they get in college. All of them have done it before. We could've let the match go but we felt like- in visiting with Gerald Myers and Judy Henry- that it was a good thing for our players, good experience for them to be exposed to a different level of the sport and also for the community and a chance to expose them to that as well. That's why we went ahead and rescheduled and USA wanted to reschedule so we did it."

On rescheduling the Nebraska match:
"We're working on that this afternoon, we just got through this one this morning. The Big 12 has asked us to find a weeknight where we could reschedule that. We should know by the end of the week when we'll play that match- sometime in November."

Quoting Lisa Hilgers on her thoughts about the weekend:
"It was a long weekend for us. It was a good thing we were stuck in the hotel instead of the airport. It was a long weekend, but we got through it. We didn't really do too much, just sat around and watched movies."
