Brown, Jones earn All-Big 12 Academic First Team honors as five other Raiders earn honorable mention
LUBBOCK, Texas - Seven Texas Tech volleyball players were honored for athletic-academic excellence as the Big 12 Conference released its All-Big Academic Teams Monday in Dallas.
Tech senior Brande Brown and redshirt freshman Janelle Jones both were selected to All-Big 12 Academic First Team honors. Five Red Raiders were selected All-Big 12 Academic Honorable Mention including junior Kim Breitbach, junior Lisa Hilgers, senior Cristine Martin, sophomore Courtney Putnam and junior Natalie Rives.
Brown, a 5-foot-11 senior middle blocker was honored yesterday as the Big 12 volleyball Player of the Week. Martin and Hilgers were also both selected last year as All-Big 12 Academic Honorable Mentions selections.
"It's always nice to have your players honored for academic awards," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson said. "We even had four or five others who were either on the bubble or didn't have the necessary competition requirements."
Big 12 Academic First Team honorees are regulars who have at lease a 3.2 grade point average who have the necessary competition requirements, while those student-athletes with grade-point-averages between 3.0 and 3.19 are listed as honorable mention.
