Texas Tech's Brown selected to All-Big 12 volleyball squad

Senior earns all-conference honors while Lisa Hilgers is named an honorable mention selection

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior middle blocker Brande Brown was named to the First Team All-Big 12 Conference volleyball team, the Big 12 announced Wednesday. In addition, junior setter Lisa Hilgers was voted as an honorable mention selection. Comprised of the conference's top 12 volleyball players, the First Team was voted upon by the 11 conference coaches.

"It's a tremendous honor for Brande," Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson said. "She had an outstanding year and has been a dominant force day-in, day-out. She's a great athlete and deserves every award she wins. I'm also happy for Lisa. She had another great year as our setter and leader. I think she's the best setter in the conference and obviously the best defensive setter in the conference for the last three years. Lisa gets overlooked because she's also the smallest setter at five-foot-five."

Brown broke records for career and season kills and also tied the NCAA record for hitting percentage in a match with a perfect 10-0-10 performance against William & Mary. She is also listed on a variety of other school charts including attacks, blocks and hitting percentage categories. Brown, a two-time All-Big 12 Academic honoree, was named Most Valuable Player in three of Tech's four pre-Big 12 tournaments and was selected to the all-tournament team of the other tournament (did not have MVP). She was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week two times during the season.

Hilgers, only a junior, has one more year to play at Texas Tech. She has already broken records for career, season and match assists and has the top three season assist totals in Texas Tech history. Hilgers also broke the TTU season digs record and will break the career record next year. She was selected to all four all-tournament teams the Red Raiders played in this year and is also a two-time All-Big 12 Academic selection.

Texas Tech concluded its season at 23-11 and in seventh place at 10-10 in Big 12 Conference play. The Red Raiders will hold their annual season banquet next Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Lubbock.
