Texas Tech's Brown and Hilgers receive All-District 5 volleyball honors
Brown and Hilgers are selected among the District 5's top 12 players as Big 12 dominates team
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball players- senior middle blocker Brande Brown and junior setter Lisa Hilgers were selected by district coaches for the 1997 All-District 5 squad announced Wednesday. District 5 consists of teams from the Big 12, Missouri Valley and Mid Continent Conferences.
Eleven of the 12 players named to the team, along with the Coach of the Year, represent Big 12 Conference teams. All-District recipients are eligible for AVCA All America honors, chosen later in December.
Brown, who was a Big 12 Conference First Team selection a week ago, broke records for career and season kills and also tied the NCAA record for hitting percentage in a match with a perfect 10-0-10 performance against William & Mary. She is also listed on a variety of other school charts including attacks, blocks and hitting percentage categories. Brown, a two-time All-Big 12 Academic honoree, was named Most Valuable Player in three of Tech's four pre-Big 12 tournaments and was selected to the all-tournament team of the other tournament (did not have MVP). She was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week two times during the season.
Hilgers, a Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention selection and only a junior, has one more year to play at Texas Tech. She has already broken records for career, season and match assists and has the top three season assist totals in Texas Tech history. Hilgers also broke the TTU season digs record and will break the career record next year. She was selected to all four all-tournament teams the Red Raiders played in this year and is also a two-time All-Big 12 Academic selection. Texas Tech concluded its season at 23-11 and in seventh place at 10-10 in Big 12 Conference play.
The selections represent the fifth and sixth time in Texas Tech volleyball history that a player was either named to the all-region or all-district first team. 1996 senior Jill Burness was the last player to be named AVCA All-District 5 last year.
