The win improves Texas Tech to 2-0 all-time against Fordham as the Red Raiders had previously taken a 3-0 victory over the Rams on Sept. 7, 2007 to start the Syracuse Tournament.
Prior to the match, Texas Tech had not won a season opener since sweeping North Texas in 2008. The victory over the Mean Green was Tech's only season-opening win since 2004 as well.
Head coach Don Flora used a starting lineup that consisted of three freshmen, two sophomores, a junior, and a senior. There were a total of four newcomers in the starting lineup as well.
Texas Tech was the first Big 12 Conference team to take the court for the 2012 season as the Red Raiders opened with a 9 a.m. first serve against Fordham. New league member West Virginia is scheduled to be the next conference team to hit the court with a 1 p.m. match.
Emily Ruetter's double-double marked the second-straight year a Tech setter had recorded double-digit assists and digs in the season opener after Karlyn Meyers recorded 42 assists and 15 digs against TCU in 2011. Ruetter finished with 43 assists to go along with 10 digs.
Aubree Piper set a new career high with nine blocks in the match, topping her previous mark of eight that was set most recently against Morehead State on Sept. 3 last year. Piper's eight block assists matched her career high as well.
The Red Raiders finished with a 14.5-8.5 block advantage, continuing a trend from a year ago where Tech was one of the top blocking teams in the country.
