FULLERTON, Calif. --  Texas Tech closed the Titan Classic with an impressive sweep of host Cal State Fullerton to take the tournament title, in Fullerton, Calif., on Saturday night.

The Red Raiders took down the Titans in dominating fashion, winning 25-14, 25-18, 25-22. With the win, Tech avenged a 3-0 loss Cal State Fullerton handed them at the United Supermarkets Arena, in 2013. Texas Tech has now started 3-0 twice in the last three seasons, and swept two opponents this weekend, after only sweeping four opponents in 2013.

“Having some of our returners step up and play with more poise and knowledge really did a lot for us this weekend,” Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said.  “A weekend like this can really set the tone for the season. It shows us hard work really does pay off. We are pleased with the effort and hard work we put in during the preseason that allowed us to get a solid start to 2014.”

After dominating the first set, the Red Raiders fell behind 7-3 in the second before going on a 6-0 run to take a 9-7 lead. Then, later in the set, leading 14-11, Tech once again rattled off six-straight points to grab a 20-11 lead before eventually winning that set and nailing it down in the third.

Sophomore Lauren Douglass continued her spectacular debut weekend, turning in her third-straight double-digit kill performance, with 10. She finished with a hitting percentage of .643, giving her a hitting percentage of .544 for the tournament, on 31 kills. She was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“Lauren was a go-to attacker this weekend,” Flora said. “As the weekend progressed, teams loaded more blockers against her and she still produced. She is a focused, calm and complete middle. She is carrying a big load for us.”

Joining Douglass on the All-Tournament team was Rachel Brummitt, who finished tonight’s match with 18 digs and three aces.  She finished the tournament with 59 digs, and just in today’s two games, jumped from 10th up to seventh on Texas Tech’s career dig list, with 1,173.

Junior Meghan Stacy led the Red Raiders with 13 kills, while hitting .333 for the match and recording nine digs. Mikia Mills and Jenna Allen each logged seven kills in the match.

Tech continued its hot offensive start to 2014, hitting .291, with 44 kills. Over the course of the tournament, the Red Raiders recorded 114 kills on a hitting percentage of .284.

On the defensive side, Tech held Fullerton to a hitting percentage of .153. For the tournament, opponents only hit .148 against the Red Raiders.

The 3-0 Red Raiders travel to Edinburg, Texas, next weekend for the UTPA Tournament. Tech will play a double header on Sept. 5, facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11:30 a.m., before taking on Texas-Pan American at 7 p.m.
