Red Raider Volleyball Takes Title at SMU with Win Over Mustangs, 3-0
Sept. 3, 2005 Dallas, Texas- The Red Raider volleyball team took the title at the SMU Tournament with a 3-0 win (30-16, 30-27, 30-17) over the hosting SMU Mustangs at Moody Coliseum. Tech went 3-0 and lost only one game in the tournament and now sits at 3-2 on the season. This was Tech's sixth victory over SMU and the series with the Mustangs now sits at 6-0 in favor of the Red Raiders. This is also head coach Nancy Todd's third tournament title. The starters for the match included seniors Desiree Batista and Brianna Florus, juniors Kiley Lyons and Philister Sang, sophomore Amy Charlebois and freshman Holly Hicks. Sang led the offense with 20 kills and Batista anchored the defense with 15 digs. Hicks chipped in with 22 assists. Tournament leaders for the Red Raiders include Sang for kills with 52, Hicks for assists with 71 and Batista for digs with 41. Sang was named Tournament MVP and Batista and Charlebois were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. "The girls really rallied to finish each game and faced their challenges from last weekend (in Houston)," said Todd. "We have really been working hard on finishing games and that really came into play today. We had another really aggressive today on the court and that was a huge asset for us." The Red Raiders will travel to Rice University on Tues., Sept. 6, for a match up with the Owls at 7 p.m.
