San Diego, Calif. - The Texas Tech volleyball team lost its second match of the year, as the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the Red Raiders 3-0 at the Peterson Gym in San Diego, Calif. Senior Kelly Johnson who contributed 12 kills, eight digs and one block in the losing effort led all Red Raiders hitters.

Freshmen Dani Nickle and Emily Ziegler earned their first starts as Red Raiders in game two and three, each bringing needed energy to the Red Raiders who gave the Gauchos a fight in game three. Nickle contributed 15 digs in her first match of the year, while Ziegler tallied one kill, one dig and 10 assists on the day.

In Game one the Red Raiders traded points with the Gauchos until 5-5. UCSB's Emily Hendrickson then stepped in with four tough serves to give the Gauchos a lead at 10-6. The Red Raiders were never able to recover from the Gauchos strong attack early, as UCSB took game one 30-16.

Game two the Red Raiders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind a Johnson kill and three consecutive hitting errors by the Gauchos. Freshmen Nickle entered the game as a starter and immediately contributed to the Red Raider defense. Nickle stepped in with a crucial dig at 7-5 that ignited the Red Raiders and led to a Gaucho hitting error. Nickle would then tally her first ace of her career at 9-7 to give the Red Raiders a two-point edge. The Red Raiders would maintain their lead until 12-12. The Gauchos then would string together a six-point run, putting them out of reach for the Red Raiders at 18-12. The Red Raiders were plagued with six late-game service errors they could not overcome, as the Gauchos took game two 30-20.

In game three the Red Raiders came out strong. Behind the hands of freshman Emily Ziegler, who got the start for the Red Raiders at the setting position, Tech put together a solid game where they traded kills with the Gauchos until 12-12. The Red Raiders would take their first lead of the match at 20-19 behind a kill by Johnson. Tech would edge the Gauchos with a block by freshman Amy Charlebois and junior Brianna Florus who combined to shut down the Gauchos offense, 22-20. UCSB would then start a late game surge topped off by an ace to seal the deal. The Gauchos would take the match and game at 30-23, 3-0 respectively.

 

 

The Red Raiders move to 1-2 on the season, and take third at the San Diego State Tournament. The Red Raiders will be back in action at the United Spirit Arena as they host the Red Raider Roundup Sept. 10-11. Tech will play host to North Texas, UTEP and UT-Pan American.
