Red Raiders Lasso Lady Broncs
Sept. 10, 2004
LUBBOCk, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team defeated UT-Pan American 3-1 today at the United Spirit Arena. The Red Raiders tamed the Lady Broncs with a balanced attack, as three Raiders recorded double-digit kills.
Sophomore Kiley Lyons led all Raiders with 11 kills, one ace, 11 digs and four blocks in the winning effort. Lyons' effort marks the first time this season a Red Raider has posted a double-double.
In the first game, Tech led from beginning to end, starting off the game with a five to one run. Tech would follow that run with two consecutive three-point runs to lead the game 16-8. The Lady Broncs would get no closer than eight the rest of the game as Tech went on to win the game 30-21 behind the stellar play of Lyons who hit .444 for game one. The Red Raiders would tally 18 kills versus the Lady Broncs' 10.
In game two, the Lady Broncs kept Tech within reach for most of the beginning of the game. The two teams traded points until grabbed a 5-4 advantage. Tech would then string together a 17-6 run that would prove too much for UTPA, who would never recover from the Tech offensive blast. The Lady Broncs would put together a late-game surge of five straight points to bring themselves within two at 27-25, but Tech would go on to win game two 30-25.
The Lady Broncs would deny Tech a three-and-out victory, as they put together a strong offensive and defensive effort to take game three from the Red Raiders 30-22. UTPA would outscore Tech in kills, assists and digs to overpower the Red Raiders. UTPA as a team out hit Tech .244 to .026.
Tech however returned to their winning form in game four, quieting the hopes of the Lady Broncs attempt of extending it to a five-game match. The Red Raiders would lead the charge behind a .319 attack percentage to UTPA's .020. Tech would also register 17 digs in the winning effort to shutdown the Lady Broncs' offensive threat.
UTPA was led by sophomore Heather Bravo who tallied a double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs on the match. Sophomore Carol Marcengo turned in a season-high 30 digs in the Lady Broncs' losing effort.
The Red Raiders move to 2-2 on the season and will face UTEP at 7 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas, later today. UTEP is coming off their first victory of the year after downing the Mean Green of North Texas 3-0.
