LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team swept North Texas 3-0 today at the United Spirit Arena, taking the all around tournament title at the Red Raider Roundup. Tech went undefeated over the weekend, defeating UT-Pan American, UTEP, and most recently North Texas to dominate the team's home event.

True freshman Amy Charlebois had 12 kills in the match on a .391 attack- percentage. Charlebois tossed in eight digs and one block in the winning effort to help propel Tech over North Texas. Senior Kelly Johnson led all Tech hitters with 14 kills on a .257 attack-percentage. Sophomore Nina Miller turned in a stellar performance at the net hitting a .300 attack percentage with four kills, to be one of three Tech hitters to hit above a .250.

Game one would turn out to be all Tech's. The Red Raiders who would open up the match with a 7-1 lead and never look back. Tech would increase its lead with three kills by Johnson, who would put Tech up 10-4. Senior Laura Grote would provide the needed offensive lift in game one, dishing out 11 assists while Johnson would lead all hitters with six kills. Tech's solid performance would lift the Raiders over the Mean Green 30-22.

Game two, the Mean Green would jump out to a fast 5-2 lead over the Red Raiders after three quick attack-errors by Tech. Tech's Emily Ziegler would however step in to ignite a Tech come back. Ziegler would serve five true points to give Tech the edge at 7-5. Sophomore Kiley Lyons then followed Ziegler's effort with a crowd-pleasing kill at 9-6, that would rekindle the Tech cheering section. The Red Raiders then traded-points with the Mean Green until North Texas mounted a comeback of its own. North Texas would tie the game at 19-19, and take their first lead at 20-19 after an attack-error by Tech. North Texas threatened Tech until the end of the match before the Red Raiders would just barely edge out the Mean Green, taking the game 30-28.

It would be Tech in game three that would take to the scoreboard first, leading North Texas early at 4-1. Then North Texas would string together a solid performance that would lead them to take the lead at 11-8. Yet as Tech has done all season, the Red Raiders fought back with a balanced attack that would be led by Desiree Batista. Batista would tally five of her nine kills in game three to give Tech the fuel it needed to tie the game at 27-27. Tech would again just squeeze out of the match downing the Mean Green to take the game and match 30-28, 3-0 respectively.

Sophomore Taylor Lawrence, with 15 kills for the match, led North Texas in the losing effort. Joining Lawrence in double digits were freshmen Katy Prokof with 10 kills and Jessica Hulsebosch with 14 digs. The Mean Green moved to 0-3 at the Red Raider Roundup and 0-7 on the year.

The Red Raiders move to 4-2 on the season and will face Oklahoma Wed., Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders will begin their quest for a berth in the NCAA tournament as they open conference play against the Sooners.
