Volleyball Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ohio State (17-13), after trailing two games to none, rallied to win the final three to defeated Texas Tech (23-11) to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championship. The win was OSU's third five-game win of the season (others against Florida and UCLA). Buckeye Rosie Snow scored a match-high 27 kills with Dana Stearns adding 24, tying her career high. Angelee Abbring collected 19 kills for OSU and Ann Botica contributed a career high 14. Courtney Putnam of Texas Tech had a team-high 24 kills with Kristen Holmes and Sonia Moric having 18 each.
Texas Tech held an 11-4 lead in game one before OSU cut the lead to 13-12 on a solo block by Botica. A kill by Heather Hughes and a block by Holmes and Lori Garber ended the game at 15-12. Texas Tech hit .274 to .236 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State broke a 2-2 tie in game two scoring the next seven points to take a 9-3 lead. Tech scored the next four points to close the score to 9-7. A kill by Stearns and a Tech error put OSU up 11-7. Texas Tech tied the game at 11 on assist blocks by Janelle Jones and Lisa Hilgers, Putnam and Moric and a solo by Hilgers. An OSU error put Tech up 12-11 and a kill by OSU's Botica tied the game at 12. Two OSU errors put Tech at 14-12 serving for the game. A kill by Jen Flynn stopped the game point and Snow's kill cut the lead to 14-13. Holmes sided out for Tech and set up their second game point. Another kill by Flynn stopped Texas Tech. Holmes sided out against and a kill by Putnam was for game point at 15-13. Texas Tech hit .381 to OSU's .346.
Down 0-2 in games to Texas Tech, Ohio State came out and quickly built up a 9-2 lead. Tech closed to 12-10 on a kill by Holmes but a kill by Flynn and two by Snow closed the game for OSU at 15-10. OSU hit .229 to .214 for Tech.
Again OSU built up a quick 9-3 lead but kept Texas Tech in check. The Buckeyes extended the lead to 12-3 and two Tech errors set game point and an Abbring kill ended the game at 15-3, sending the match to a fifth game. The Buckeyes hit .300 to .059 for Tech.
The fifth game (rally scoring) stayed within one point and was tied at seven by OSU's Stearns on a kill. Stearns's block with Snow was for point eight and a Tech hitting error put OSU up 9-7 as Texas called a time out. Back-to-back kills by Snow and Stearns pushed the OSU lead to 11-7. A kill by Moric cut the lead to 11-8 and an OSU hitting error closed the gap to 11-9. Kills by Snow and Stearns put OSU up 13-9, but Holmes countered with a kill for point to make the score 13-10. Hughes gave up a point with a service error setting up match point at 14-10. Snow closed out the match with a kill closing the two hour 38 minute match at 15-10. OSU hit .400 for the game to .100 for Tech.
For the match, Ohio State hit .288 to .217 for Texas Tech. OSU had a 14-12 edge in blocks while Tech had the edge in digs, 74-72, while each team had six ace serves.
The win advances Ohio State to the second round against the winner of Florida vs. Chattanooga. That second round match will be played Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Gainesville.
