Texas Defeats Texas Tech Volleyball Team

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 13 ranked Texas Longhorn volleyball team handed Texas Tech its first Big 12 loss of the season with a 15-9, 15-11, 11-15, 15-6 defeat Friday at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Texas improves to 3-0 in the Big 12 and 8-3 overall while Tech drops to 2-1 in the Big 12 and 15-2 overall.

Texas Tech led in three of the four games but could manage only one game victory. Texas won game won 15-9 after rallying from a 9-9 tie and 8-6 deficit. The Red Raiders grabbed an 8-4 lead in game two and led 11-9 at one point but Texas rallied from behind to claim a 15-11 game two win. In game three, Tech rallied back from a 8-6 deficit with seven consecutive points to lead 13-8 to cut the gap to 2 games to one. But Texas put Tech in the hole after jumping out to a 7-1 lead in game four and won its third game with a 15-6 game four victory.

Tech was led by sophomore outside hitter Courtney Putnam who finished with 10 kills (23 attempts) for a .304 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Cristine Martin and senior middle blocker Brande Brown each finished with 11 kills apiece. Brown, who entered the match ranked ninth in NCAA hitting percentage at .418, managed only a 11-10-35 night (.083 hitting percentage). Junior setter Lisa Hilgers contributed 38 assists and 13 digs for the Red Raiders. Hilgers was honored after game two with a game ball for breaking the Texas Tech career assists record last week against Iowa State. Tech also saluted its 1996 NCAA Tournament team with a banner ceremony before the match.

Texas was held to .137 hitting (49-28-153) for the match while Demetria Sance had a match-high 15 kills in 31 attempts (.387) and 17 digs. Lakisha Bledsoe added 11 kills in 21 attempts (.476) while Pavlina Steffkova contributed 40 assists and 11 digs. Tech managed to outkill Texas 51 to 49 but the Longhorns took advantage in two key categories: hitting percentage (.137 to .084) and blocks (27 to 13) for the victory.

The loss snaps a six-match and 18-game winning streak for Tech. Tomorrow, the Red Raiders will host No. 14 Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m. in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Texas A&M played Baylor on Friday.
