Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 14 Texas A&M
LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 14 Texas A&M handed Texas Tech its second straight Big 12 Conference loss with a 15-5, 15-10, 11-15, 15-2 decision Saturday before 637 fans at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Tech falls to 2-2 in the Big 12 Conference and 15-3 overall while Texas A&M improves to 3-1 in Big 12 play and 10-3 overall.
Texas Tech lost the first game after falling behind 8-0 to start off. The Red Raiders came back in game two, but A&M rallied from a 9-9 score to win 15-10. Tech grabbed an early 10-4 lead and held off an Aggie rally to win game three 15-11. In the deciding game four, the Aggies jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back.
Tech was led by senior outside hitter Cristine Martin (15 digs) and senior middle blocker Brande Brown who finished the match with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Junior outside hitter Angela Cooper hit .357 and contributed seven kills and freshman middle blocker Janelle Jones chipped in seven kills along with a .308 hitting percentage. Junior setter Lisa Hilgers finished the evening with 41 assists and 14 digs.
All-America Kristie Smedsrud keyed Texas A&M's attack as she totaled 24 kills in 55 attempts for a .309 hitting percentage. She also broke the Texas A&M career kills record as she needed only 13 kills before the match. Cindy Lothspeich and Stacy Sykora (18 digs) each finished with 12 kills and setter Farah Mensik contributed 57 assists. As a team, Texas A&M outhit Tech .276 to .205 and outblocked the Red Raiders 15-8.
It was Tech's second consecutive loss after dropping a 3-1 decision to Texas on Friday. The Red Raiders hit the road next weekend for Big 12 Conference matches against Kansas (Oct. 10) and Kansas State (Oct. 11) before playing at Baylor (Oct. 15) and hosting Oklahoma on Oct. 18.
