Texas Tech Volleyball Wins First Two Matches of Season

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team began its season in the win column as it won its first two matches Friday as host of the Sheraton Shootout at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Tech swept Texas-San Antonio 15-5, 15-0, 15-11 for its first victory of the season and followed it up with a 7-15, 15-3, 15-3, 15-8 defeat of Portland in the nightcap.

Saturday, Tech will face SMU in a noon contest and play Ohio at 7:00 p.m. in Lubbock Coliseum. The Ohio matchup could be the key match leading the Sheraton Shootout championship as Ohio also won its first two games of the tournament. Tech began the day with decisive victory against Texas-San Antonio. The Raiders easily won a 15-5 decision in the first game but used a 15-0 second game to break Texas-San Antonio over three sets. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Putnam led the Raiders with eight kills while junior middle blocker Brande Brown followed with seven and junior outside hitter Kristen Holmes tallied six. Junior setter Lisa Hilgers registered 29 assists in the match and surpassed the 3,000-career assists mark in the performance.

Tech struggled and dropped the first game of its second tournament match with Portland 15-7. But the Raiders, led by Hilgers and Brown rattled off seven straight points and won game two 15-3. The rest was downhill for the visiting Pilots as the Raiders swept the final two contests. Putnam had a phenomenal evening as she registered career-highs in kills (18 kills and two errors in 37 attempts) and attack percentage (.432). She was one of three Tech hitters to reach double figures in kills as Brown notched 12 and junior outside hitter Angela Cooper tallied 10. Hilgers added 25 assists and 20 digs from her setter position.
