Texas Tech volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson has announced the 2000 schedule and the addition of Kelly Johnson to the recruiting class of 2000. The Red Raiders will open their first full season at the United Spirit Arena with the Red Raider Classic. Texas Tech will open the season on the road as they travel to Columbia, South Carolina. Tech, along with Duke, Liberty and Xavier, will play in the South Carolina Tournament, Sept. 1-2. The Red Raiders will face five 1999 NCAA tournament participants including Big 12 members Nebraska, Texas and Texas A&M.

Kelly Johnson, a 5-10 outside hitter, will round out the 2000 freshman class as Coach Nelson's fifth newcomer from the state of Texas. The Ft. Worth native was named District 9-4A Player of the Year for Arlington High School. In her senior season, she tallied 309 kills, 147 blocks, 175 digs and a 90 percent serving efficiency.

Johnson will join setter Laura Grote (Austin), outside hitter Angela Mooney (Lubbock), middle blocker/outside hitter Jana Kubalova (Bryson) and defensive specialist/outside hitter Courtney Shambaugh (Arlington) when practice begins in August.
