LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team picked up its second victory of the spring Saturday afternoon, topping New Mexico State, 3-1 (29-27, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19), in Ruidoso, N.M.
The Red Raiders improved to 2-0 this spring with the victory. The two teams practiced against each other during the morning before scrimmaging in the afternoon session at Ruidoso High School.
"There was more quality volleyball against New Mexico State than in previous weeks from our overall play," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "We learned some good things about ourselves and that shows some quality growth as a team and as individuals. It is always good to play a quality opponent and have them put some pressure on us to see how we will respond. I think we responded fairly well overall in this match."
Jenna Allen led the Red Raider attack for the second time this spring with 17 kills while fellow outside hitter Meghan Stacy added five kills on just seven attacks en route to an impressive .714 hitting percentage.
The Red Raiders hit .242 as a team against the Aggies, who advanced to the NCAA Championship this past season after claiming the WAC Tournament title. Tech's middle blockers combined to hit .312 as a group with Brianna Grant leading the way with a .500 clip while Mikia Mills totaled a .455 percentage.
Rachel Brummitt boosted Tech's defensive efforts with 17 digs from the back row.
Tech continues its spring slate Saturday morning, hosting its own tournament at the United Spirit Arena where the Red Raiders will face West Texas A&M, New Mexico Military Institute and Wayland Baptist.
