Tech Volleyball Inks Two for 2006

Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball head coach Nancy Todd announced the signing of two student-athletes for the 2006 season, as today marks the beginning of signing period.
Alicia Ostmeyer, a native of Grinnell, Kansas, is a 6'-2" middle hitter. Ostmeyer played the 2005 season for Colby Community College, where she was a two year starter and team captain her second year there. The team finished third at the Region VI tournament. Ostmeyer was 32nd in the Nation in hitting efficiency, hitting 38%, pounding down 432 kills. She was also 11th in the Nation for blocks per game with 277 blocks. Ostmeyer finished the season with All-Region VI first-team and all-conference second-team honors.
Brittany Hughes, a 6'-0" native of Monahans, Texas, has played middle blocker and outside hitter. She was the MVP of the 2004 state finals where her Monahans high school team captured the state title. The squad was state runners-up in 2005. During her time at Monahans, Hughes led the squad to four consecutive district, area and regional championships.
She was named the Player of the Year on the 11th annual Standard-Times All-West Texas Volleyball Team. Hughes finished the 2005 season with 797 kills, 151 aces, 360 digs and 153.5 blocks. For her career, she had 2,678 kills, 300 aces, 1,342 digs and 511.5 blocks. Her 2,678 career kills are the most by a player in U.S. high school history, as are the 17.6 kills that Hughes averaged per match in 2004. She ranked eighth nationally in career blocks (516) and 10th in single-season kills (808 in 2004).
She was selected as the Small School Player of the Year, (Class 1A, 2A, 3A) for the second-consecutive season by LoneStarVolleyball.Com. In addition, LoneStarVolleyball.Com also named Hughes as an Outstanding Hitter - Honorable Mention selection. The Texas Sports Writers Association voted Hughes to the TSWA Class 3A All-State team as a first team Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter. Hughes was selected to the TGCA West All-Star volleyball team, a first team Class 3A All-State selection, as well as Academic All-State. She was named to the Class 3A State All-Tournament team, and selected as the San Angelo Standard-Times All-West Texas MVP. In addition, she was named as the first-ever Region I-3A MVP at the Region tournament in Lubbock, and awarded the District 3-3A MVP award for the third consecutive year by the district coaches. Hughes was also named as a 2005 High School All-American by PrepVolleyball.com.
