LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and her BIP/USA team finished the European Global Challenge in fifth place Thursday, completing a weeklong trip overseas for international play.
Dowdy's squad, which went undefeated through four pool play matches on Monday and Tuesday, fell in the opening round of the double elimination format on Wednesday. The team rebounded Thursday to defeat an Italian squad, 2-0, for fifth place, finishing the tournament 6-1 overall.
The European Global Challenge took place in Pula, Croatia, pitting eight U.S. squads against eight from European countries. As part of the trip, Dowdy also got to travel to Italy and Serbia, competing and training with several local club teams in each country before the tournament began.
"This trip was an amazing experience and I enjoyed every second of it," said Dowdy, who was competing internationally for the second time in her career. "It was great to experience different cultures and styles of volleyball. I'm excited to get back to Lubbock and start the 2011 season."
Dowdy, who returns to the U.S. on Saturday, will join the rest of the Red Raiders for the start of the 2011 season as Tech opens fall camp on Aug. 8.
