LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Miara Cave picked up her first honor for 2012 Tuesday as she was named to the Big 12 preseason volleyball team in a vote by the conference coaches.
Cave, Tech's top offensive returner from a year ago, was one of 15 conference players honored. It marks the third-straight season a Red Raider has been represented on the preseason team after Amanda Dowdy garnered the accolade the past two years.
The San Antonio, Texas native totaled 298 kills a year ago to go along with a .231 hitting percentage. She also provided a stable blocking threat from the right side as she put down a team-leading 99 blocks last season as well.
Iowa State, Kansas State, and Texas led all conference teams with three selections each. The Longhorns swept the preseason individual honors as Bailey Webster was named the Player of the Year while Molly McCage was honored as the Freshman of the Year.
League coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. The conference office will announce the preseason poll on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Raiders officially report for the start of the 2012 season later this afternoon with a team dinner followed by a set of meetings at the United Spirit Arena. Tech opens the season Aug. 24 against Fordham in the Boston College Invitational.
