LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2012 Texas Tech volleyball season officially began Tuesday evening when 22 student-athletes reported for a team dinner and a series of meetings at the United Spirit Arena.
The Red Raiders, who are coming off a 15-17 first season under head coach Don Flora, met with the athletics department's compliance, strength and conditioning, athletic training, and communications staffs in preparation for the first team practice Wednesday afternoon.
"We are excited that the 2012 season is finally upon us," Flora said. "We had a great first meeting, and I'm excited to begin working in the gym tomorrow morning. We have several familiar faces back to go along with several newcomers, so it should be a competitive fall camp."
Flora returns nine letterwinners from a year ago while adding 11 newcomers and two players that redshirted the 2011 season. Tech boasts just two seniors in Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan to go along with juniors Ciara Gibson, Kelly Chiffer, and Aubree Piper as well as seven sophomores and 10 freshmen.
The Red Raiders open the 2012 season Aug. 24 against Fordham at the Boston College Invitational. Tech will also face Binghamton, Siena, and the host Eagles during opening weekend.
