Aug. 10, 2000
Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech Volleyball team announced the 2000 captains today according to head coach Jeff Nelson. Seniors Colleen Smith and Janelle Jones along with sophomore Ann Romjue were chosen to lead this year's squad.
Colleen Smith, a pre-season all-America candidate, recorded 358 kills last year in her first season as a Red Raider. The Albuquerque native played in 106 games during her junior season and is considered the top returning player on this year's team.
Senior Janelle Jones played in 94 games last season and will be a leader for the Red Raider offense this season. Last year, she tallied 168 kills for an average of 1.79 per game. Jones, a native of Denver, Colo., is a pre-season favorite for academic-all America honors as she has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Rounding out this year's captains is Ann Romjue. Romjue, a sophomore from Papillion, Neb., had an outstanding freshman season last year. Romjue set two Texas Tech freshman records and was ranked by the conference in two categories. Romjue saw action in 108 games last season and tallied 347 kills.
"I am very pleased with this group of captains," said head coach Jeff Nelson. "The team respects each of them and I know that they will do a great job of running the floor."
