LUBBOCK, Texas - Through one week of fall camp, Don Flora likes what he sees out of his 2012 volleyball team.
With less than two weeks prior to the season opener, the second-year Texas Tech head coach got his first glimpse of the progress made Saturday evening as the Black team topped the White, 3-2, in the annual preseason scrimmage at the United Spirit Arena.
"It was great to see what a difference a year makes," Flora said. "It was nice to have an environment that was competitive, and sometimes in your face, but also one that had the team element as well. It's early but we are seeing several positive pieces to the puzzle. I like where we are at this point."
The White team took an early 2-1 lead through three sets before the Black squad was able to rally with 25-23 and 15-11 victories over the final two frames.
Breeann David led all players with 11 kills for the Black squad. The sophomore also added six digs for a team that also featured steady setting from freshman Emily Ruetter along with solid play in the middle from junior Aubree Piper, who finished with five kills.
The Red Raiders open the 2012 season on Aug. 24 at the Boston College Invitational. Tech will face Fordham, Binghamton, Siena, and the host Eagles in the two-day tournament.
