Volleyball Holds Annual Red-Black Scrimmage

LUBBOCK, Texas - One week before kicking off the 2006 volleyball season, the Red Raiders hit the court for an intra-squad scrimmage Saturday evening. The event was held in the practice gym of the United Spirit Arena.
Head coach Nancy Todd returns five starters from last year's team that finished 11-20 overall and 4-16 in Big 12 matches. Top returners for the Red Raiders include seniors Kiley Lyons, Jamye Pauley and Philister Sang. Lyons ended the season third on the team in digs and kills. Pauley finished with 85 blocks, second on the team behind departed senior Brianna Florus. Sang completed her junior year leading the team in kills with 500.
Other returning starters are juniors Emily Ziegler and Amy Charlebois. Ziegler returns as the team's assists and aces leader, having 859 and 38, respectively. Charlebois finished second in kills and third in blocks.
Todd brought in three freshmen and one junior transfer who will compete for starting positions throughout the pre-conference tournaments. Freshman Jenn Harrell of Katy, Texas, enters as the libero for the Red Raiders, while freshman Brittany Hughes will look for playing time at outside blocker. Transfer Alicia Ostmeyer and freshman Kelli Minardo will compete for time at middle blocker.
The season gets underway next Friday, August 25, against Sacramento State at 1 p.m. in El Paso, Texas, as part of the Ready One Sun Bowl Invitational. Also on Friday, Tech will face host UTEP. On Saturday, the Red Raiders will wrap up the tournament with a match against Eastern Michigan and finally New Mexico State.
