Aug. 23, 2014
LUBBOCK, Texas - Rachel Brummitt's 12 digs and Jenna Allen's 10 kills led the way for the Red squad in a 3-0 win over the Black squad in Texas Tech's annual Red and Black Match, held at the United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Red team won the first set, 25-19, took the second set, 25-20 and closed it out with a 25-15 win in the third.
This marked the final preseason match for the Red Raiders before they open the regular season at the Titan Classic, next Friday.
"It's a nice deal to have a good number of people out here at our scrimmage that I haven't seen before," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "It's a great sign for our numbers to be great at a scrimmage on a Saturday afternoon before we even play another team. It's our time, and we're building something here."
A couple other bright spots for the Red squad were sophomores Lauren Douglass, who provided nine kills on a .583 hitting percentage, and Marguerite Grubb, who contributed 34 assists and five kills with a hitting percentage of .714.
"Marguerite [Grubb] has done a nice job of stepping into that role from a setting perspective," Flora said. "We have a great competition with all three of our setters, and it's nice to have options, but Marguerite has really settled into that role nicely. Her distribution was solid, her deceptiveness was good and she provided a little bit of offense, too."
After opening the Titan Classic with Sacred Heart on Aug. 29, the Red Raiders will play a double header on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Bucknell, and the tournament host, Cal State Fullerton.
