LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Rachel Brummitt earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday morning while freshman Emily Ruetter was named the conference Rookie of the Week in an announcement by the league office.
The selections mark the first time in school history two Tech players have been honored in the same week and only the third time multiple athletes have been recognized with a weekly award in the same season.
Brummitt became the first Tech player to receive a conference weekly award in consecutive weeks after another record-setting performance last weekend during the Lonestar Showdown where she totaled 60 digs over three matches while adding four aces.
The Plano, Texas native snapped the Tech single-match record for most digs in a three-set match against San Jose State as she recorded 27 to break a 21-year-old record of 24 that was set by Sheila Solomon against Houston on Nov. 16, 1990. The libero, who was also named to the all-tournament team, had previously tied the record Aug. 24 against Binghamton.
Brummitt also finished with 21 digs in the tournament finale against Northwestern State, her third 20-dig performance already this season. She currently ranks second in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.70) and fourth in serves aces per frame (0.47) as she has 14 on the season.
Ruetter, meanwhile, paced a balanced Tech offense where the setter dished out 111 assists to go along with 21 digs and seven blocks. The performance moved Ruetter to sixth on the Big 12 charts in assists per set as her 9.69 per frame average after last weekend was also the second-most among conference setters.
In addition to her performance offensively, Ruetter also posted her third double-double of the season against San Jose State as she totaled 10 digs from the back row. She is the first Tech setter to earn a conference weekly award since Lisa Hilgers on Nov. 16, 1998.
The Red Raiders have now picked up six weekly award selections in just over a season under head coach Don Flora, an immediate improvement over recent years where had been honored just 12 times during the past 15 years.
TCU's Yvonne Igodan completed the conference weekly award recipients as she was named the Offensive Player of the Week. The selections do not reflect Tech's victory Monday over North Texas.
The Red Raiders open a seven-match road trip this weekend when they travel to Missoula, Mont. for the Best Western Grant Creek Inn Invitational. Tech will face Towson, Furman, and host Montana during the two-day tournament that begins Friday.
