Texas Tech and UC-Santa Barbara finish 2-0 in first round matchups of Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Volleyball Classic
September 11, 1998 LUBBOCK, Texas - Both Texas Tech and No. 4 ranked UC-Santa Barbara finished 2-0 in first round matchups of the Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Volleyball Classic Friday in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Texas Tech (7-0) defeated Belmont 15-2, 15-7, 15-3 and Oral Roberts 16-14, 15-12, 15-3 while UC-Santa Barbara (5-0) swept Oral Roberts 15-13, 15-11, 15-8 and Centenary 15-3, 15-1, 15-9. The victories set up a 7 p.m. showdown tomorrow in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. The first 125 fans through the doors receive a free tournament tee-shirt. Texas Tech dominated Belmont as its starters played only the first game en route to a 3-0 victory. Kristen Holmes led the Red Raiders with 11 kills while Janelle Jones chipped in eight kills and Natalie Rives finished with six. The Red Raiders then swept Oral Roberts (2-4) in the nightcap while limiting the Golden Eagles to .000 (33-33-145) hitting. Texas Tech placed three players in double digit kills including Holmes with 11, Natalie Rives (.429 hitting) with 11 and Courtney Putnam with 10 along with four players in double digit digs including Holmes (14), Rives (13), Lisa Hilgers (12) and Skydra Orzen (10).
