Quotes From Volleyball Head Coach Jeff Nelson|
Sept. 18, 2000
LUBBOCK, Texas - "We played well. We went 3-1 this week, but played really well in all the matches. It was a tough match, starting with last Wednesday night at Baylor. We played a really good match. It was a long match, about two-and-a-half hours. We won the first game pretty easy and then got in a battle and couldn't quite pull it out. We made a couple, I would say more mental mistakes than physical mistakes that cost us, for sure cost us game four. But they are things we can correct. We played well."
"For the week we hit almost .300 against good teams. That's a good sign. They had a tough crowd and we made a couple mistakes on things that we can probably do everyday in practice. I think that will work itself out."
"Colleen Smith had an unbelievable match down there. She broke a school record. She had 30 kills in four games and just had an absolutely phenomenal match, as she did throughout the weekend in the tournament. She was the MVP of the [LSU] tournament and led it in kills and hitting percentage. She is just really leading the way at the net for us."
"Sky Orzen played real well in the tournament and set real well. Ann Romjue is recovering from her sprained ankle, struggled a little bit in the Baylor match but then picked it up in the tournament. Hopefully she'll be close to 100 percent by Wednesday. That did slow us down a little bit this week, but she worked through it. She was tough and got it done for us. Janelle Jones is really picking it up in the middle and picked it up in the tournament at LSU."
"This week we have Kansas State on Wednesday night. They are a very good team. They are a team we have a great rivalry with. We've been able to win at home and they've won at home the last two years. They've been long matches, very grueling matches. We look for another one this week. They are led by junior outside hitter Liz Wegner. Their other outside hitter Cari Jensen and Kelle Branting in the middle are their three main hitters. They do a really good job. They move the ball around well."
"We're going to have to beat them with strong defense and serving, the basics. We've got to do really well at the things we do well to win this match."
"On Saturday we go down to Texas. We play at 1 o'clock before the football game. That's really a critical match for us, because Texas has been struggling. If we can go down there and jump on them, it's our chance to turn the tables on them. We feel like this a year where the state of Texas is wide open, and we'd like to be the team in Texas, and this is one of our opportunities to take care of that. A&M, Texas and Baylor, we're all pretty close, and we want to be the team that comes out on top at the end of the year. It's going to be a real important match, in-state and recruiting and everything else we do."
"We're happy we were are. The teams we've played have been doing really well. A couple of them picked up wins over nationally ranked teams this past weekend. That's having a real positive effect on our power rankings. I think we're sitting at 28 or 29 right now and we'd like to move up a little bit and with a couple of wins I think that will happen. Obviously, that's not our first priority but it's something that we do want to stay in that group and it comes to the end of the season and those power ratings for the tournament and getting a good seed."
