NORMAN, Okla. - It took the The Texas Tech volleyball team 47 minutes to defeat Oklahoma Saturday as the Red Raiders registered a 15-4, 15-0, 15-5 victory Saturday over the Sooners. The victory improves Texas Tech to 12-8 overall and 2-6 in the Big 12 Conference while Oklahoma falls to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in the Big 12.
Aided by 12 service aces (including four from Lori Garber) and a .375 hitting percentage, Texas Tech stormed the OU Field House for its second Big 12 win.
Tech grabbed a 7-0 advantage before the Sooners even scored a point in game one. Oklahoma cut the lead to 8-3 but Texas Tech gained momentum off a Jenny Donohoo serve to score the last six points for a 15-4 win. The Raiders kept the momentum as they used several service aces to gain a 15-0 second game victory. Texas Tech won its first game 15-0 since defeating Central Michigan 15-0 in game two on Sept. 19, 1998. Game three saw Tech take a 6-1 advantage. Oklahoma cut the margin to 6-4 but the Red Raiders rattled off nine of the next 10 points for the game and match victory.
Senior Lori Garber led Texas Tech with nine kills and a .692 hitting percentage (9-0-13). Freshman Ann Romjue finished with five kills in 11 attacks (.364 hitting) and six digs while junior Janelle Jones contributed four kills and four blocks and freshman Jenny Donohoo registered four kills.
Texas Tech hosts TCU on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Lubbock's Coronado High School.
