LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Rachel Brummitt was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after her record-setting performance last Wednesday night against Oklahoma.
It is the first conference weekly award for a Red Raider this season and the third in Brummitt's career as she earned the accolade in back-to-back weeks on Aug. 27 and Sept. 4 of last year.
Brummitt, who has already snapped her own single-season digs record this year, broke the Texas Tech and Big 12 records for a four-set match with 36 digs against the Sooners. The performance topped the long-standing Big 12 record of 35 digs that was set by Texas A&M's Erin Gibson on Sept. 23, 2000, against Colorado.
The Plano, Texas native also placed herself in the Tech almanac once again, breaking Ann Romjue's four-set school record of 33 digs that was set on Nov. 17, 2002 against Texas A&M. Romjue previously controlled the overall Tech single-match digs record to herself as well with 36 digs coming in five sets against Texas A&M on Nov. 18, 2000.
It was the second 30-dig performance of Brummitt's career at Tech so far as she also totaled 34 in a five-set victory over Houston Baptist on Sept. 14 last year at the Rice Invitational. Brummitt will wrap this season with at least 20 digs in half of Tech's contests as she has reached the 20-dig mark in 16 of 31 matches entering this Saturday's regular season finale with TCU.
Brummitt closed the week with 13 digs last Saturday at No. 22 Kansas, giving her 49 over a two-match span at a conference-leading 7.00 digs per set average. She also added five assists and one service ace on the week while failing to record any reception errors.
Brummitt enters this week ranked second in the Big 12 and among the top-25 liberos nationally with a 5.16 digs per set average. She is also eighth in the conference with a 0.27 aces per set average.
The Red Raiders and TCU are set to close the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the United Spirit Arena. The match will be Senior Day as Tech will recognize its lone senior Aubree Piper prior to the contest.
