Texas Tech Volleyball Team Completes First Intrasquad Scrimmages
Red Raiders Play Through Two Practices on First Scrimmage Day
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team completed its first two scrimmages of the preseason Saturday at the Women's Gym. In five total hours, Tech played 12 games over the two three-hour sessions.
Tech head coach Jeff Nelson was pleased with what he saw on the day. "For the most part, I was really happy with the effort and concentration," Nelson said. "Everybody had their moments and we saw some things that we need to work on and improve before the season begins. That's what scrimmages are for."
During the afternoon session, the Red Raider first team consisting of juniors Lisa Hilgers, Angela Cooper, Brande Brown and Natalie Rives, sophomore Courtney Putnam and redshirt freshman Janelle Jones and freshman Heather Hughes, easily won the first two games. In the fourth game, a team led by senior Cristine Martin, junior Heather Fife and junior Kristen Holmes rallied to defeat the first team 15-2. Nelson rotated his teams for the final two games.
No. 36 Texas Tech is preparing for its first regular season competition on August 29-30. The Raiders will host four teams in the 10-team Sheraton Shootout at the Coliseum including Texas-San Antonio, Portland, SMU and Ohio will all compete in the five-team invite. Following that weekend, the Raiders will compete in the South Florida tournament in Tampa, Fla. on September 5-6 where they will play No. 22 South Florida.
