Team Effort Leads Women's Cross Country to Third Place Finish

Oct. 2, 1999

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Texas Tech women's cross country team turned in its most impressive race of the season, taking three of the top six spots in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree at the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course in Stillwater this morning. The Red Raiders finished third out of 16 teams with 101 points. Baylor University, ranked No. 26 in the country, was first with a score of 40 while Adams State (Colorado), winner of seven consecutive Division II national titles, was second with 69 points.

Leigh Daniel remained undefeated for the season, winning the race in a time of 17:14. It marks the third consecutive win for Daniel, one of the early season favorites to win the national title. Daniel topped the next best collegiate competitor, Karin Ernstrom of Baylor (3rd, 17:28) by a full 14 seconds.

However, the most impressive part of the meet for the women was the support Daniel received from her teammates. Kristen Koppes finished fifth out of 123 runners overall in a time of 18:01. Evette Turner finished right behind Koppes in sixth place with a time of 18:03. It was the second time this year that Tech has placed three runners in the top 10 at a meet. Tara Hangge (44th, 19:29) and Aimee Roberson (47th, 19:40) rounded out the scoring for the Tech women.

Up next for the Red Raider's is a home meet at Mae Simmons Park. The Red Raider Classic will take place next Saturday, October 9.
