Tech Women Finish 21st at Pre-Nationals

Oct. 16, 1999

Bloomington Ind. - Propelled by a third place finish from Leigh Daniel and a 36th place finish by Kristen Koppes, the Texas Tech women’s cross country team came away with a 21st place finish at the Pre-National meet hosted by the University of Indiana in Bloomington this morning.

With 33 teams competing in the "A" division of the pre national race a 21st place finish will undoubtedly look good for the team as it attempts to qualify for the district championships.

"It went real well for us today," said Tech coach David Smith. "Villanova was last year’s national champion and we finished right behind them while Notre Dame is a very tough team in their district and we beat them. It bodes well for us."

Daniel, who had been undefeated this season coming into the meet, finished the race in a time of 17:14 while Koppes came in with a time of 18:02. Evette Turner was the team’s third best finisher with a time of 18:14. Tara Hangge (210th, 20:07) and Courtney Nolen (218th, 20:26) rounded out the scoring for Tech.

Up next for the women will be the Big 12 Championships to be held in College Station on October 30.
